Each character was ranked on a "scale of ridiculousness" to map out where they fell in terms of adherence to societal norms, how expertly they concealed their true selves, and how they presented themselves to others. This ranking was used as a design foundation for each costume. The characters that were rational and honest had less extravagant and less colorful garments. Those that were fully immersed in salon culture had bright, intricate, and gaudy costumes.
